Initial or New patient Consultation
The important information obtained during the initial new patient consultation helps to inform the next best steps to take.

I may sometimes ask you to collect some more information about your child and their bowel habits or other symptoms with a diary that you can bring to an appointment with you.
Here is a link to a children's bowel and symptom diary. Feel free to print one off and bring with you to an appointment so that we can try to identify any patterns or associations.

A great deal of emphasis is placed on what is reported by parents or other family members as being of concern. I will always, as much as is possible, try to find out directly from your child what their experience has been. I may use diagrams or poo charts to help.

You may also find useful information on various digestive issues affecting children on the Useful resources page

Please ask questions at any time if things aren't clear. If you're like me and remember them afterwards, jot them down when you think of them and we can discuss them at a later time by email or in a follow up consultation.

Follow Up Consultation
This is a useful time to review the situation with you and your child, to go through any results and clarify any points of information.

The goal is to achieve some progress with a suitable treatment plan that we can implement together and that you can use at home.

If medication has been started, it is a good time to
  • review the dosage being used
  • consider an alternative treatment if it has not helped
  • consider reducing and eventually stopping it when the situation has improved

As medicine has its own jargon or language, it can be confusing when not familiar with it. I will minimise the use of this when we discuss things, and I'll explain what I'm talking about to you and your child.

Please ask questions at any time if things aren't clear.

Face to face and Video consultations

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on many aspects of our lives including the way we work. Blended working using face-to-face and remote consultations has been one of the outcomes.

A remote consultation can be useful for following up on progress and discussing results especially if long distances are involved, so I also have video consultation availability

If the clinical situation allows for this and if that is something that could suit you please let us know and I will do my best to help you this way.
