When to see a Paediatric Gastroenterologist

Specialist help for tummy troubles in children from newborn to 18

Common stomach and bowel problems in babies and older children

Gastrointestinal symptoms are fairly common in children and adults. I explain a lot more about these symptoms here in the useful resources section of the website.

We, or our children, have probably all experienced a short-lived episode of a tummy upset with vomiting and/or diarrhoea or a bout of constipation for example. Tummy aches are also a fairly common symptom in children.  Although they can be uncomfortable for a while, most of these symptoms will usually settle.

However, when your child's tummy symptoms or troubles
  • are unusually severe or intense
  • persist beyond what one would consider a normal time frame
  • have an impact on their growth or weight
  • affect your child's general wellbeing and quality of life
  • appear similar to conditions that affect other family members, for example coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or peptic ('stomach') ulcer disease
then it would be sensible to seek medical attention.

As a parent, and the person that knows your child best, if you are concerned that your child
  • has one or more of the troubling symptoms from the list below
  • may be affected by one of the conditions listed below
  • has stomach or bowel troubles that just do not seem right for the reasons above, and you'd like to understand why
then you should seek out the advice of an experienced Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist.

By using a holistic thorough approach to understand what your child is going through, Dr Crespi can help diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms and conditions.

In his paediatric gastroenterology clinics he sees children of all ages, from newborn through to 18, with a wide range of digestive issues including:
  • abdominal pain or tummy ache - read more about this here
  • belching or burping
  • bloating
  • blood in poo (see video here)
  • blood in vomit
  • chronic constipation and poo accidents - read more here
  • chronic diarrhoea (very frequent or runny or extremely soft poos)
  • colic
  • Eosinophilic oesophagitis
  • feeding issues
  • food allergy and intolerance
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux and heartburn
  • Helicobacter pylori and peptic ulcer disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Crohn's disease (a type of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD)
  • Ulcerative colitis (another type of IBD)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Lactose intolerance
  • poo problems - hard poos (constipation) and poo accidents
  • swallowing problems
  • vomiting
Please have look at the Useful resources page or the Much Ado about Poo blog posts, for more detail about some of these common symptoms and conditions

If you're concerned about any of these issues affecting your child, then please have your child assessed by a medical practitioner with expertise in this area.
